What's up y'all!
This blog post is long overdue for a few reasons but the most pressing matter right now I feel is the connection between hair and stress...Let me first properly introduce myself. I'm Johnna Sabree, a 3rd generation hairstylist, hair loss practitioner, salon owner, and educator with over 20 years behind the chair. You can also add mother, wife and do it all Diva to my marvelous resume lol. So... this last year has been one for the books! I don't even need to go into it. We have all been affected by Ms. Rona in some way but as a hair stylist I have never seen women experience so many issues with their hair.
Let's start with the four month quarantine, most of us responsible stylist stopped taking clients for obvious reasons but it was really hard speaking to my clients about their hair issues during that time because I wasn't able to physically help them. I did what I could which was make custom wigs and suggest the best products for them to use until things got back to normal but at the end of the day, when we stress, our bodies go through it and most of the time our hair and skin suffer most. Even the best wigs are no match for stress and I know first hand what it feels like to be physically affected by stress and then stress even more because now you're looking at the manifestation of the stress and thats causing you to stress even more! (Deep Sigh)
During the quarantine I began making products because I honestly couldn't suggest products that I felt would tackle the underlying problems that were causing the hair issues for my clients and so many other women. It was crazy! I would see women on Facebook talking about their hair issues at that time and it wasn't just that the salons shut down, people were stressed the hell out. As a hair loss practitioner I know that stress is directly linked to hair loss, even if you don't necessarily loose your hair behind stress, your growth cycle will still be affected. The reason for this is testosterone, the body begins to produce more of it when we are in stressful situations. Aside from that when our hormones are out of whack the production of sebum is affected as well which can affect the scalp.
These scientific facts motivated me to create my line of hair care products because we are divinely created and I chose to use the best of what mother nature has to offer when it came time formulate because thats what we deserve. I combined my knowledge of hair and my preference for natural products due to my and my children's sensitivities to be the foundation for Johnna Sabree Hair Care. I also considered what black women go through with their hair on the day to day, we are wonder women and a lot of times it can feel like we have to choose between style, hair care, and handling our business so a lot of times our hair takes a back seat or the convenient seat.
As a vet in this hair business I've been able to maintain because I can do it all. My skill set is versatile because we as black women are versatile and I created products for the versatile woman. Everyone is not into natural hair or better yet they don't have the patience for it. There has been a natural hair take over and I love it but I'm still in the trenches (Salon) and some women still get relaxers, wear sew in weaves, and not everyone is into wigs. What I know to be true for every woman is a desire for a healthy head of hair and a clean scalp.
Johnna Sabree hair care is the answer to every woman who can't find a stylist who specializes in "hair care". I've made it so that you can take care of your hair in the simplest way, we do so much already and we are dealing with so much right now! I want my products to take some of the stress way from your hair regimen. I see so many women resort to the ponytail or wig cause they've given up on their hair and the hair salon all together and I get it! But you know the saying; "Your hair is the crown you never take off" It's absolutely possible to have healthy, beautiful hair but it starts with a healthy scalp and mind.
As we move into a new month and soon a new year let's all focus more on the positives and put a little extra time in taking care of ourselves, a great way to start a fresh new regimen would be to write a list of things you need to do for you. I'm talking about head to toe pampering. Check my hair care systems I'm launching soon, they are packed with essential oils and natural ingredients sure to make your scalp, hair, and you happy ... Again it has indeed been a tough year but keep showing up in all your glory and fabulousness!
